I wouldn’t call myself a voracious reader, but over the past few years I’ve been trying to get more reading in. On top of that, I’ve been working on reading/listening to books outside my normal comfort zone. Last year one of my favorite books was The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu. I had no idea what this book was about, but the title just made me want to give it a go. I’m glad I did! It was a great listen. Non-fiction has generally something I’ve ignored, but I’ve been pretty happy with some of the choices I’ve made branching out.
Currently my reading habits are still a big mess. I have a rotation of books that are small enough I can read and walk during breaks at work. I have another rotation of books that are bedside for my wind-down time at the end of the night, and a whole list of audio books to get me through my commute. I think the only reason I can keep all these titles separate in my head even though I’m sometimes reading/listening to all of them in the same day is they tend to be completely different genres.
All this rambling is to say that if you like to read you should find the time for it. I’ll be the first one to tell you I have to many hobbies. Reading and board games are the two I don’t think I could ever give up. It’s taken me several years to get back to reading regularly, but I’m happy that I have. I’m hoping all the reading will help with my writing, but so far I’m still a rambling mess. 😀
Oh, I’m also reading kids books on the regular now. My kid may very well be a voracious reader when she gets older. She currently can’t get enough of books. We have the Harry Potter illustrated books that have been released, and I’m hoping we can start on those soon!
What are some of your favorite books? What’s a book that you really enjoyed thinking you wouldn’t at first?
Also, here’s my Good Reads profile. If you do that thing you can friend me over there!
A small sample of my physical book collection
I started collecting board games for my kid before she was born. Actually, I started collecting games for kids before I even considering having a kid. I loved playing with my nieces and nephews, younger cousins, and friends’ kids. So, because of all that my two and a half year old has a sizable board game collection. Some of which is age appropriate, but most of which she’ll be growing into.
Her current favorite is First Orchard from Haba games. Haba makes some of the best games for younger kids. With simple to follow directions, chunky pieces, and a lot of early development assistance. If you’ve ever wondered where/how to get your younger kids started in gaming this would be a good first place.
What are some of your kids current favorite games?
I have a few games that I’ve updated with fancy bits or inserts to make set up easier, but Downfall of Pompeii has been the most satisfying one to update. I purchase some tiny meeple, and was gifted a flickering LED for the volcano.
It’s been pretty great watching as people get excited about throwing tiny wood meeple into a glowing volcano (usually mine).
I really don’t think I could be any happier with the way this one turned out, and I truly can’t wait to play this many more times before the year is over!
This is the first time I’ve shot and edited a video on my phone. Please provide suggestions on Android apps you prefer for this or how I could make these tiny videos better!
I’ve had this entry written up for months. I wondered if I would ever feel comfortable enough to share it, and while I’m still not 100% comfortable sharing. I feel like it’s time. Continue reading “An Introspective”
Pardon the dust while I stretch my creative brain to make this space something I want to continue using. I was getting anxious to start writing again so I’m jumping the gun before I have the space formatted well. Please don’t use this against me! 😀
Now that that’s out of the way, here’s what you can expect from me:
- Ramblings about life
- Pictures and opinions on board games
- Some stuff about beer maybe?
- Pictures and words about what it’s like raising my tiny human
- Dog and cat pictures!
- And basically anything else I feel like putting in this space
For now there won’t be a schedule for writing. If viewership increases and people want to see something regular then I may consider it, but mostly this will just be where I ramble about whatever’s going on in my head.
So, here’s the first entry lets hope I actually keep writing!
